Art is a big ministry Ocean’s Edge partakes in, so we are working a lot in the parks cleaning them and painting murals. In 2019 a group staying with Ocean’s Edge painted some of the light posts on the main strip of town. This week a couple of us went around cleaning these light posts. Most of them just had a layer or two of dirt, but the first day we were cleaning, we came across a couple of posts covered in bird poop. Cleaning these posts could seem nasty and/or pointless, but what would you think if you saw someone cleaning the painted light posts in your community?

Jaco is a small community, and even though it is a tourist community, the locals know who we are. While cleaning light posts, both locals and tourists see us and question what we are doing. Because of this we were able to interact with a couple of different people. We first met a couple of guys from Texas (who thought we just got really bored, so we decided to clean the light posts lol). A little while later, we were able to talk with a man we met a couple of weeks ago. He is from Canada, now living in Costa Rica. After talking to him and deaning a few more posts, we met a family who lost their house in a fire. None of us were carrying any cash, so we walked with them to the grocery store. Those of us who didn’t have masks, stayed outside with our cleaning supplies while the rest went inside to buy the family groceries. While our communication was limited due to the language barrier, they were extremely thankful, and my teammate was able to get their contact information to give to our host.

Even though we weren’t the most excited about cleaning posts, we did it with lots of laughs (and a couple of disgusted screams). And after cleaning the most bird poop covered posts is when we began having these interactions with people one right after the other. A day that started with an assignment that didn’t seem exciting turned out to be one of the best days interacting with locals. To me it was a great reminder of what God can do when we obey His direction with open hands and hearts
